Artist Statement:
Growing up as a Navy "brat", I have lived all over the United States, and even spent a few years in Cuba. This experience exposed me to different cultures, music, foods, and means of artistic and self-expression. Being surrounded by a family whose foundational tenants are military, sports, our faith, our family, and creativity, it was not unusual to see someone creating something, either with food, music, words (spoken and written), dance, photography, and art. My love for art—for painting, sketching, and pottery—came because of the people in my family who influenced me towards expressing my emotions through my artistic voice: my grandfather, my mother, and my aunt.
I found myself enlisting in the United States Army, serving alongside those who had a different upbringing, culture, belief, and sometimes even moral upbringing than I did. This too influenced my art. As well as my upbringing surrounded by various cultures, families, people, and my own experiences as a woman of color (Nigerian, Ghanian, Bajan-Barbados, Indigenous Seminole, Jewish, Irish, Trinidadian, British) growing up in the South, who suffered the tragic loss of her fiancé to brain cancer, suffered two miscarriages, and lost a few people to suicide has shaped my art into what it is today.
Expression. Emotion. Love. Joy. Pain. Longing. Desire. Struggle. Triumph. Family. Destiny. And soulmates are all things that are interwoven in my work using acrylic, oil, charcoal, and even marker to achieve the beauty that is the human experience. From my heart to yours. I hope you are moved by and touched by my work.
